Assumptions
- Straight fence line on flat ground.
- Posts at each end and every spacing interval.
- Pickets are uniform width with consistent gap.
- Corner, gate, and terminal posts may need extra hardware not counted here.
- Post spacing typically 6–8 ft for wood privacy fence.

How to measure
Measure the fence line along the planned post centerline from end post to end post, following grade. Confirm post spacing matches your design and local wind-load habits.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting gate posts and latch-side spacing.
- Using nominal picket width without adding gap.
- Not adding extra posts for changes in elevation or direction.

How far apart should posts be?
6–8 ft is typical for wood privacy fences. Closer spacing handles wind loads better.
Does this include a gate?
No. Plan gate width, posts, and hardware separately.
Chain link vs wood?
This targets picket-style layout. Chain link uses fabric rolls and different post counts.
Slope adjustments?
Stepped or racked fences on slopes need longer posts and may change rail lengths.
